Forest Technology Professor wins Woodsmen Title
2007 Fryeburg Fair Woodsmen’s Field Day
Don Quigley, Professor of Forest Technology at the Thompson School of Applied Science at UNH out paced 21 other competitors and won the Master’s Division at the 2007 Fryeburg Fair Woodsmen’s Field Day. He finished first in four events on his way to the victory. Don competed in the Ax Throw (21 points), Log Roll (19.1), Underhand Chop (21.5 seconds) and the Bucksaw (7.33 seconds a new record). He then teamed up with Jim Colbert, a longtime friend, and the two of them set another new record in the Crosscut Saw (6.51 seconds). Don has been a longtime competitor in lumberjack events getting started back in 1973 as a member of the UNH Woodsmen Team. Over the many years of competition Don has traveled around the world competing and learning about the sport. When not teaching in the Thompson School Forest Technology Program he and his partners run Granite State Lumberjack Shows. This company produces events for the Stihl Timbersports Series® which you may have seen on ESPN. Don still willingly gives of his time helping promote the sport on campus. This past fall he conducted an ax sharpening workshop for the Woodsmen Team.
