Prospective Students
From classroom to woodland, students who enroll in the Thompson School's forest technology program cover a remarkable amount of ground in two years. This program provides a broad understanding of forest environments and tree ecology through work in the classroom, the laboratory, the sawmill, and outdoor field study.
For every hour of lecture, students spend two hours in a living classroom. UNH maintains more than 3,000 acres of certified New Hampshire Tree Farm, where students develop critical skills like forest mapping and surveying.
As stewards of an important natural resource, graduates face an interesting challenge—how to balance forest conservation with wise use. That's why we offer a broad range of courses from arboreal tree care to fire control. Summer internships and field trips to forestry operations, sawmills, and professional meetings complement these studies, and help students select the right career.
Admissions Requirements for Forest Technology Students: Applicants to the FT program must present at least two years of satisfactory work in college preparatory mathematics and sciences (Biology, with a lab being one of them).
