Aspiring Hands awarded $5,000 for Somersworth Youth Haven Project

Durham, NH, Feb. 22, 2012 - Newman’s Own Foundation recently announced that Aspiring Hands, a University of New Hampshire student organization, received honorable mention in their 2012 “Campus Community Service Challenge”. This honor includes a $5,000 award that will be used to support the group’s ongoing work with Somersworth Youth Safe Haven, an after school mentoring program and resource center that works with local youth, ages 6 to 18.  Story>>>

'Freak the Mighty' Author gives Somersworth youths insight to his popular book

SOMERSWORTH — Author Rodman Philbrick gave members of the Youth Safe Haven program an insight into the thought process for his children's novel "Freak the Mighty" at a book-signing event Friday afternoon.

"The kids have been excited all day to meet an author," said Kate Hanson, professor of community leadership at the University of New Hampshire and longtime friend of Philbrick. Story>>>

Warmth from the Millyard project aids in meeting the community need for winter clothing

Since 2007, students from the CoLead Program at UNH Manchester have collected and distributed lightly used winter clothing to local receiving organizations and have been able to raise awareness of poverty in the state of New Hampshire. Through their web-based matching system, Warmth From the Millyard is able to match recipient organizations in need with donor groups and businesses that collect and distribute donated items. Creating individual partnerships between donors and recipients allows a personal relationship to develop a feeling of community involvement.  Story>>>

Vicky Herbert, 24, was recognized as the Dover Police Department's 2010 Employee of the Year, Friday night at the McConnell Center. Herbert is the Coalition Coordinator for Youth 2 Youth and has been an employee with the Police Department for five years. Story>>>

Girl, 7, Gives to Others on her Birthday with Help From the UNH Manchester, Warmth From the Millyard Project

For her 7th birthday, Katie Lessard, of Bow, decided that other children needed gifts more than she did. With help from her mother, Katie put out the word that her birthday was going to be a little different this year. "They needed winter coats," she said. "I wear mine every day to school. It's chilly when they go outside."Her mother, Daphne Lessard, said that for Katie's birthday party, they told people to bring coats to donate to other children.  Story>>>
