Who is that dog in Congreve Hall?
By Arika Zielfelder
In Congreve Hall and around the TSAS and UNH campus you are likely to come
across UNH Freshman Arika Zielfelder and her Service Dog, Buddy. Buddy is a 2 1/2 year old Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix who was specially trained by the non-profit organization, Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).
In order to differentiate Buddy as a Service Dog rather than a "pet dog" you will notice he wears either a blue vest with the CCI logo, or a harness with the CCI logo. Buddy helps Arika with daily physical tasks, such as: opening and closing doors, picking up dropped items, carrying objects, and pulling her wheelchair with a specially designed harness.
In order to help Buddy assist Arika safely and do his job correctly, there are some easy guidelines that should be followed when you come across Buddy or any other Service Dog:
- Don't pet or touch Buddy without asking Arika first. This will help to keep
Buddy focused on his job. Depending on the situation and if Buddy is "on duty" Arika may or may not be able to give permission to pet Buddy. - Don't call Buddy's name. This will also help Buddy to stay focused on Arika.
- Don't feed Buddy. This could distract Buddy from his job and lure him away from Arika. Buddy has a special diet and exercise routine that keeps him at an ideal weight so that he can safely perform tasks for Arika.
If you have any further questions regarding Buddy, Canine Companions for Independence, or general Service Dog questions, feel free to ask Arika if you see her around campus!
