Whether you have just graduated from high school, are considering a career change, or already working within a community organization, this award-winning program can help you build valuable skills-such as supervising volunteers, facilitating meetings, speaking in public, organizing events, writing press releases, fundraising, and creating newsletters. It is one of only a handful nationwide to combine hands-on community outreach with an academic study of communities, leadership, citizen influence, and non-profit organization management.

Under faculty guidance, our students work in schools, crisis shelters, environmental organizations, animal care facilities, museums, advocacy programs, town offices, citizen groups, and other community-related organizations. A combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience prepares them to work collaboratively in leadership roles to find positive solutions to shared problems, and to effect social change at local, regional, and national levels.

Our graduates have gone on to great success in nonprofit management jobs, public relations positions, event planning work, and teaching. Many of our graduates go on to earn their bachelor’s degrees.

Here’s what our students say about their experiences in the Community Leadership Program:

“Nowhere else do you have the community service opportunities and networking resources.” Matt Morin ‘04

“The hands-on approach to learning benefited me tremendously! I was able to get a chance to put what I was learning into action and was able to gain a better understanding and knowledge of the skills that I was learning because I was using them. The hands-on approach provided me with the ability to put my previous skills to better use and to practice my new skills in controlled settings.” Jesse Barnes ‘05

“Small classes, individual attention, accessible teachers, and fun students!” Emily Lavin ‘03

Admissions Requirements for Students in the Community Leadership Program: Applicants to the CoLead program must present at least two years of satisfactory work in college preparatory mathematics and possess strong community service or leadership experience, plus strong verbal and written communication skills.
